Modafinil is a drug that promotes wakefulness and treating people who experience excessive daytime sleepiness due to narcolepsy. It reduces extreme sleepiness due to narcolepsy and other sleep disorders, such as periods of stopped breathing during sleep. Has been popularly categorized as a psychostimulant due to its wake-promoting properties, may be an effective treatment for the management of multiple sclerosis fatigue in some people where daytime sleepiness is a factor in their fatigue, awake during work hours if you have a work schedule that keeps you from having a normal sleep routine.

This medication does not cure these sleep disorders and may not get rid of all your sleepiness. Modafinil does not take the place of getting enough sleep. These studies concluded that evidence on the effectiveness of modafinil in treating MS fatigue was weak and inconclusive. It should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder. This includes a lower liability to abuse, and a lower risk of adverse effects on organ systems.  Modafinil works by selective activation of a particular part of the brain called the hypothalamus. Modafinil reduces the effectiveness of contraceptive drugs so you will need to consider other birth control methods.

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit from it. We then outline and attempt to synthesize the complex literature addressing the neurochemical effects of modafinil, particularly as a potential treatment for cognitive dysfunction. Unlike central nervous system stimulants, modafinil does not result in excessive tiredness (a ‘crash’ or rebound hypersomnia) as it wears off. To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used modafinil for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal.
