Concerta (Methylphenidate)

Concerta help improve mental and behavioural symptoms of attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including difficulties paying attention, impulsive behaviour and hyperactivity, used to treat narcolepsy (a sleep disorder that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden attacks of sleep). When remedial measures alone are insufficient, the decision to prescribe stimulant medication will depend upon the physicians assessment of the chronicity and severity of the patients symptoms. When potential benefits outweigh risks, prescribed “off-label.” However, symptoms of ADHD will only improve when there is enough medication in the body.

Once the medication wears off at the end of a dose or at the end of the day, ADHD symptoms can return. Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to methylphenidate, to any other medications, aspirin (if taking Adhansia XR), tartrazine dye (a yellow dye in some processed foods and medications; if taking Adhansia XR), or any of the ingredients in the methylphenidate product you are taking. Ask your doctor or check the Medication Guide for a list of the ingredients. Therefore the physician who elects to use Concerta for extended periods should periodically re-evaluate the long-term usefulness of the drug for the individual patient. Long term use The effectiveness of Concerta for long-term use has not been systematically evaluated in controlled trials.

You and your doctor may have to adjust the timing of doses according to your needs. There is enough medication in your body for an important class or activity. They can help you balance the risks and the benefits of this medicine during pregnancy. You should seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist about taking this medicine. Do not be concerned if you see a tablet-shaped object in the toilet or in your stool. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature, away from light and excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom).
